I had Perlane injected into my folds and little marionette lines...how long does the bruising, swelling and "tightness" last around the injection site?
I also had deeper lines on one side of my face - the side i sleep on. that side got more perlane so it's a bit stiffer when i smile. will that even out? Thanks!

We use Perlane in our practice for those lines/folds that would benefit from a product that offers larger particles which result in more correction. Typically, there isn't a lot of swelling noticeable for the laugh lines (nasolabial folds) because of the placement/location of the product. However, because the product works by drawing fluid to the area for the plumping and filling effect, the feeling of tenderness and tightening usually resolves within a few days while the full benefits will be realized in approximately 2 weeks. Refrain from massaging and manipulation unless specifically told to by the practitioner. Be certain to communicate your concerns with the one that did the procedure.
Reassurance from the right source goes a long ways!

Bruising and swelling stays for a few days. Listen....you can't mess up with those fillers. A child could do it. No matter how little you know, you would have to put a whole lot of filler before one side of your lips gets bigger then the other. When the swelling goes, not much is noticable. You don't need a surgeon or anybody else playing with their 'so called sterilized' needles in your body. They like to make it look complicated so they can stiff your money. If you are not afraid of needles, do it yourself...I do my lips, everything. Make sure you change the tip of the needle every 2nd or 3rd injection and it won't hurt. I get 10 mg for $250 instead of $4000 at some surgeon. The safest way is to inject yourself. Stay away from those clinics !!! To many needles and blood goes through those places...accidents happen fast.

There are so many things wrong and ridiculous with this statement that I wasn't initially going to reply. However, let's do it:
1. Perlane is NOT to be used in the lips or mouth.
2. No, a child could not do it.
3. It doesn't require a "whole lot" of product to make one asymmetrical.
4. Only one to two needles comes with one syringe - so where are you getting multiple "tips" of needles?
5. Perlane and any other filler does not come in milligrams - it isn't measured this way
6. I've never met or heard of any physician or "clinic" that charges $4000 for a syringe of any kind of filler.

Wow!
Thanks, Lori.
This kind of advice is not only bordering on insane, it's illegal!
I feel like I'm watching "HOUSE".
I hope we all know it's best left to a professional with experience. Problems can happen (as is evidenced in many of these forums).
However, good luck if you try it by yourself. If you have a bad outcome, I'll be happy to help fix it. . .

yep, I too thought that was one of the weirdest things i've read. swelling and bruising went away after a few days. I like the results. So far, the only thing I wish I'd done differently is get another syringe - but i wasn't sure how drastic the results would have been - and had read about "chipmunk effect" if you do too much filler in the folds.
6/5/08
It's always better to start with less.
It's a lot easier to add more than try to fix a "chipmunk"!
Go ahead and get another syringe. Nobody is holding you back :-)

The comment from Francineparent is completely wrong. Please ignore everything she said.
To answer your question, the bruising will resolve over a few days to a few weeks. The product is intended to cause some water absorbtion but that seems to smooth out after a few days to a few weeks. If you have a lot of bruising, the blood associated with that bruising will cause additional swelling which will also resolve within a few weeks. Some patients feel that Arnica, Bromelain Pineapple Extract and Ethanol Free Witch Hazel, all available over the counter, help make brusing go away more quickly.

I really need someone to clear this all up for me PLEASE! I had by a REAL doctor, Perlane injections in my upper lips to try to smooth out that cigarette smoker look. (No I do not smoke nor have I) I just read that Perlane is not to be given in the lips. My real problem is that not only do I have bruising and uneven bumps but my lips look like I should be on the Simpsons. Not funny:( I do not know what to do I am frantic. It's only been a little over two days. What can I expect? Was my physician wrong in doing this? Is there anything I can do to ease the look? How long will it take to wear off? Please anything! Frantic in PA:( (What I meant by a real doctor is that she has been my family doctor for many years. Her and several other physicians opened a Spa)

Dear Momdon,
Try to relax. First, Perlane can be used in the lips. It is not my favorite filler for lips, but it can work well. If your doc put in too much Perlane, don't panic! It is fairly easy to dissovle Perlane with Hyaluronidase. You may want to wait a few days and see if the swelling goes down.

I just had Perlane placed in the nasolabial folds and on the corners of my mouth where there were small impressions. Everything looked fine when I left the Dr.'s office, until I went home and started to massage it, per the Dr.'s instructions. Now one side near the corner of my mouth looks like I have cotton stuffed in my cheek. Has the massaging made it worse? I have since stopped the massaging, but my smile looks a tad bit deformed, and as if there is too much filler placed on that side. Should I be concerned, or is this normal swelling that has to run its course? Please help!

Dear Momdon,
I agree with Dr. Sinclair. Don't fear. As mentioned earlier in this forum, swelling is common after injection of any of the hyaluronic acid fillers (such as Perlane). This generally goes away in a couple of days. If it appears that you had too much placed, ask the physician to inject hyaluronidase. It is an enzyme that will dissolve the hyaluronic acid usually in 1-2 treatments. If the swelling goes away and it looks ok but maybe just a bit too much, leave it alone. The fillers will slowly wear off over several months. My experience has been that lip fillers will go away much more quickly than advertised and than those used in the nasolabial folds.

as the originator of this thread, i can tell you if you take tylenol for the pain and arnica for the swelling and bruising, and stay hydrated, you will be back to normal in a few days (but I had my smile and marionette lines filled - no lips).

Dear Lexa,
Without seeing the results, I cannot really comment. My suggestion would be to call the physician's office where you had the procedure performed and ask their opinion. It may be something that they can look at easily and tell if something needs to be done.

I had 1cc of perlane in each of my cheeks four days ago and I was happy enough with the results - but over the last few days the perlane seems to have started to fade.
I spoke to the office of the PS and they told me to come in for a top up but they also said they would not discount the charge which I'm really unhappy about.
How can perlane start to go after less than four days?!!!
7/3/08
Perlane is designed for deeper, more pronounced wrinkles/folds and to add volume when shaping the face with fillers. Because it has only been four days since your treatment, you may want to wait the two week mark which is the optimal time frame wherein the product enhances volumizing by drawing water to this area. It could be that you had some tissue swelling initially that is now resolving. This may lead one to think that they are now losing their results when the results may actually have just begun to be realized. Another possibility is that you may have benefited from more than just one syringe. Using less than the necessary product will almost always lead to disappointing results. It's good that you spoke to the practitioner regarding your concerns. However, I wouldn't recommend having more product added until you see the final results at the two week mark.

It is very likely you had swelling for the first few days and are now seeing the actual volume of the Perlane.
It should STILL be there.
I usually need 2cc or more of Perlane for full correction. However, with people starting to use fillers at very early stages of "deflation" . . . more people can get by with only 1cc.
It sounds like you are one of the majority that need more than 1cc.
Was this explained to you?
Do you have photos for everyone to see?
Good luck.

Lori,
It looks like we posted at the exact same time (10:07am).
We should have just issued a joint statement. :-)
Good point about following up in 2 weeks for additional filler. We never bring someone in earlier unless we recommended a certain volume and they needed to "free up funds" before having the appropriate amount. This is done very rarely since we know that it's always best to put in the correct amount the first time.
When someone is partially corrected, they may not trust you to do it right. . .unless you REALLy took the time to emphasize how much you believe they need and they chose an alternate plan (with your approval).

I was injected on Wednesday and it is now Monday morning! I have no swelling just redness at injection sites! Small amount of pain upper lip only, none in the folds. I am a big fan of jevederm! But my Dermatolgist likes this product better! So i went for it! Hope it last longer than 3weeks now I'm worried!

Hi Cindy,
Don't worry. The Perlane (or Restylane if that's what you had in your lips) will last longer than 3 weeks.
Keep an eye on the redness at the injection sites. You should have your doctor take a look to make sure you are not becoming infected. You must seek medical attention if the discomfort worsens, sites have a discharge (stuff coming out of it. . ."pus"), red area becomes larger, you develop a fever, or have any other problems that concern you.
I hope this helps.

I love blogs. First off thanks to the experts lending advice and explaining situations more clearly...I just had my upper lip filled with Perlane as my main objective was to balance out the look of my mouth (lower lip was much fuller). It's been about 24 hours and my upper lip has a duck look and is much bigger than the lower - which was not filled. In addition to this, I have some bruising as expected and not too worried about. My question to the experts is can I expect the upper lip to subside in swelling? it is at least 50% fuller than my lower. Or will I have to go back and fill the lower part to further balance it out...Hope this makes sense!

Dear Consumer:
Good questions, and yes, your questions make perfect sense!
Typically, Perlane is not used in the mouth because of the amount of volume it provides. In fact, the volumizing will continue for 2 weeks after the injection. Although it is not unusual to have swelling/bruising to the lips, what you are describing (ex: 50%) sounds quite extensive. Most people prefer a fuller but natural looking mouth. If your return to the same practitioner to have more product added to the bottom lip to balance out your proportion - you may end up being very unhappy or chasing the upper lip and lower lip with more product trying to find the right balance wherein the bottom lip is slightly fuller than the top. This usually creates an vicious cycle and an unhappy patient. I would recommend that you contact your practitioner to describe your condition and ask for an evaluation. If after the swelling has calmed down and the full effect has taken place (2 week mark), and you are not liking the outcome, ask about reversing the effects with hyaluronidase. In the future, you may find that Restylane or Juvederm offers a nice filling effect without the degree of swelling/over-volumizing with Perlane.
