Green tea is made from the dried leaves of Camellia sinensis, a perennial evergreen shrub grown primarily in Asia.
Green tea contains anti-oxidant flavonoid phytochemicals called catechins or polyphenols. The main catechins in green tea are epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), gallocatechin (GC), epigallocatechin (EGC), and epicatechin (EC).
These antioxidant catechins have been shown to protect against free radicals that cause tissue damage and in some cases, even cancer.
