I was diagnosed with breast cancer in August, 2013...

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in August, 2013. Shortly after being diagnosed, my world turned into a series of doctors appointments. I had a bilateral mastectomy in September, 2013, followed by 6 rounds of chemotherapy, and 33 treatments of radiation. After this, the biggest decision I had facing me was whether to undergo plastic surgery or not. Unaware of how to even go about choosing a plastic surgeon, I was referred to Dr. Whitfield via my breast surgeon. I immediately felt comfortable with Dr. Whitfield, so much so that I did not feel the need to get a second opinion. His staff were friendly, and efficient. The wait times were minimal, and plenty of reminders were given for appointment times (which is a huge plus considering the effects of "chemo brain" and many other appointments that come with the diagnosis!) Dr. Whitfield recommended a DIEP flap for reconstruction. Initially, this scared the life out of me. I was apprehensive, and wanted to learn more about it before committing to the procedure. Dr. Whitfield was extremely patient with me during this time, and allowed me all the time I needed to make a decision. He was helpful and very informative. I decided to go ahead with the procedure. I am now 10 days out of surgery, and could not be happier. My initial hesitations were further nullified upon hearing the nurses at St. David's say that his patients typically recover very well, and are easy to deal with! He is very highly regarded by them all! Hearing this was very reassuring knowing I had the following few weeks of recovery ahead of me. Thank you Dr. Whitfield for the time and patience you gave me. I look and feel great again!
