How long will it take Erythromycin to work effectively on moderate papular rosacea?

There are many great treatments for Rosacea.  I don't consider erythromycin to be one of the best treatments.  I encourage you to research on Rosacea.org or breakupwithyourmakeup.com.  Soolantra is a great prescription.  Pulsed dye laser may also give great quick results.  Stay skintastic. 

In my office in the USA, what we have seen working best for rosacea is a new topical Rx called Soolantra.  It is applied once a day and it is different from the Metrogel and Finacea gel we have had in the past.  I've seen it take moderately severe rosacea down in two weeks.  Patients who were on oral medications like doxycycline have been able to go off of them.  I don't know if Soolantra is available in Ireland.  

Rosacea is
very complex and a tailored treatment program give the best results. This is
because there are many types of rosacea (telengtctatic or capillaries, flushing
and redness, acne like rosacea, ocular rosacea and even rhinophyma rosacea.)

To add to the
complexity, everyone has different flare factors- Sunlight, stress, foods,
chemical irritants, creams, changes in temperature, alcohol. The list goes
on.

A detailed
history, together with a treatment tailored according to YOUR type of rosacea
will give the best results. As a guide, I use a combination of -

1. Lasers (
to treat redness, broken capillaries, rhinophyma, flushing)- best laser is the
V BEAM. IPL can be used, but usually not as effective

2. Creams -
anti inflammatory

3. Tablets
-anti - inflammatory (Erythromycin and doxy)  and sometimes low dose Vitamin A. 

4. For
females- Mineral make up is recommend, over make up that contains parabens.

For the best
results, consult a dermatologist for both medical and laser treatment
options.

I am glad you asked this question. There is no one best answer for every patient ( if there was, we wouldn't need as many dermatologists....)If after this time you aren't seeing a response, then its time to make a follow up appt. I don't use much erythromycin. I use other antibiotic but for the bumpy lesions as you describe,  I might suggest a topical retinoid such as finacea. Most people prefer topicals to oral meds. Skin care is essential so I hope you also have that conversation with your dermatologist!All the best,Dr Beverly Johnson
