Why would gynecomastia surgeon cut nipple?

Question

I just had gyno surgery (tissue removal/lipo). There are bottom incisions as expected. But one of my nipples is cut and stitched right in the center of it. Does anyone know why this may have been done, or was it an error? It is stitched and scabbing so I can't tell if it's a clear scalpel cut or a tear. I am worried what it will look like once it's healed. I have not seen the surgeon again yet. I've only seen a nurse for a general post-op but did not see this until I got home.

There are three types of surgical treatment options available that treat gynecomastia. The doctor will recommend the one that is best suited to each individual case. The excision technique is used on cases of #gynecomastia where excess skin and glandular breast tissue must be removed and the areola or nipple needs reduction and repositioning to create a natural looking appearance. The incision patterns are determined by the specific condition of the patient. The doctor will recommend this procedure which combines the liposuction technique and excision technique to create a natural look. Patients are given specific instructions for the recovery period. Men who suffer from large #areolas may notice that after breast surgery, the skin of the chest muscles will tighten, causing the areolas to tighten and diminish in size. This is a result of the removal of glandular and/or adipose tissue.

I suspect that your surgeon was performing a nipple reduction. Without seeing photos I suspect that it will heal fine but you should certainly discuss it with him/her.

Whenever there is a question about a surgery, I would deal with the surgeon directly. Otherwise you will be guessing and confused. Your surgeon is there for questions like these and should be available. Hope this helps.

There must've been a good reason and I think everyone will agree that this is between you and your surgeon. Not good enough to speak to a nurse in the office. It's after-the-fact but in our facility these are all done through a tiny all but invisible incision inside the armpit including removing the gland.
