Are teardrop implants available in a smooth surface?

The purpose of texture (in the case of shaped implants) is to prevent device rotation. In contrast to round devices, shaped implants need to maintain a particular orientation within the pocket. If a round device rotates, it is still round. If a shaped device rotates, it no longer conforms to the classic tear drop shape.The texture acts as a sort of "velcro" allowing capsular in-growth and holding the orientation in place. For this reason, shaped implants are always textured.Textured devices have a lower rate of capsular contracture, however, when placed submuscular the difference is negligible.As always, discuss your concerns with a board certified plastic surgeon (ABPS).

Teardrop implants only come textured.
It is true that the reported cases of ALCL have only been found in cases where textured implants were used. The incidence of ALCL is very rare though, and I will still recommend a textured implant when clinically indicated. I think some of the advantages of a textured implant in given circumstances outweigh the risk of ALCL. This rare form of lymphoma however must always be mentioned as a risk for any patients undergoing breast augmentation.

ALCL is very very uncommon. Capsular contracture is commonThere are a number of companies that are suggesting that microtexturing which is available in anatomical implants is better than microtexturing. in reducing the incidence of ALCL. I am not aware of any smooth anatomically shaped implants.Smooth implants have increased risks of capsular contracture.

Smooth implants only come in a round shape.  The texturing on an anatomical implant helps prevent rotation (& capsular contracture).  The risk of ALCL is extremely low and not a reason to completely avoid textured implants.  Discuss the pros & cons of a smooth round implant vs the anatomical one with your plastic surgeon.  All the best

Hi thereTear drop implants use their shape to provide shape to someone who has very little tissue, to preferentially expand the lower pole of a breast where the lower pole is short or to provide added projection to a nipple that is slightly low and camouflage the apparent sag.  They also tend to produce a more 'natural' shape in higher volume augmentations than round implants do.  In order to achieve these goals the implants should kit move or rotate.  Smooth implants will move around and rotate so teardrop implants cannot be made smooth.I hope that clarifies things.Kind regardsDr Mark HanikeriPerth Specialist Plastic  Surgeon

Thank you for your question.  You are correct, tear drop breast implants are only made in the textured style of breast implant.  Smooth walled breast implants only come in the round shape.  There are new health risks with textured implants.
