I was diagnosed with the BRCA-2 gene mutation in...
This is a tough decision for any woman of any age to make. I was facing down an 84% chance of developing breast cancer over my lifetime with multiple women in my family dying from the disease – only my mother has survived and that was via mastectomy. There were a lot of tears and tough moments, but Dr. Whitfield and his staff were there to hold my hand through the entire journey. You’re not just a number in a spreadsheet or another patient on the bankroll. This is a personal journey and Dr. Whitfield treats each patient with a great amount of respect and care. His bedside manner is like none I’ve ever seen. He tells you the cold, hard facts, but delivers it all in a way that is easily understood by non-medical individuals such as myself. All pros and cons are laid out in the very beginning as are the details of the procedures he will be performing.
I’m here a year out from my initial surgery and two minor revisions. Mastectomies are not what they were like when my mother had her procedure done. There are so many options now, and plastic surgery has progressed so much in the past decade. I look at my pre-operative pictures versus the post-operative pictures, and I personally think that I look much better than before. I have significantly reduced my chances of developing breast cancer, and have gloriously reconstructed breasts to show for it. Dr. Whitfield has mad skills.

Over the moon happy with DIEP Flap. Dr. Whitfield is an amazing surgeon! Three years ago I had undergone a double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction using implants, a procedure performed by Dr. Whitfield. I decided after some time that implants just weren't for me and met with Dr. Whitfield again to talk about DIEP as an option. He went over all of the details of the surgery, answered all of my questions, and quelled any fears that I had. I'm a just shy of four weeks out from the surgery and regret nothing! I have soft, natural breasts with the added benefit of a tight tummy! I cried when I first saw them, not because of fresh scars or pain, but because that is how much they meant to me. They look and feel like my original breasts! I have experienced no major complications whatsoever thanks to his skilled hand. It is a tough surgery, but he and his staff are there to hold my hand every step of the way. He visited me in the hospital daily to make sure I had everything I needed. He's a doctor that answers his phone and doesn't talk through his nurses. Anytime my anxiety kicked up, he was just a phone call away, day or night. His calm and collected bedside manner exudes confidence and gives renewed hope. I don't know where I'd be without Dr. Whitfield, but I know I wouldn't look half as good nor be near as happy with the results if I had even remotely considered another surgeon. There's a reason people across the country fly to Austin TX to receive his services.
