Getting Otoplasty After Years of Hating my Elf Ears - Utah

ORIGINAL POST

Hello all! I am 25 and getting an otoplasty...

Hello all! I am 25 and getting an otoplasty surgery tomorrow. Here's my story...

I have always had elf-life ears (see picture. haha). It's bothered me at various times in life, but never been a source of teasing or anything like that, because I have really long hair and bangs and so they never protrude in public quite like they do in this photo. It's more or less been something I've had to notice. I.e., always feel self conscious swimming, or a strong gust of wind, that sort of thing. Or, even just getting out of the shower and looking at myself, I have those days of, "wow my ears really stick out."

Well last March, I got a breast augmentation. When I was looking up procedures, otoplasty caught my eye. I saw the price that one particular surgeon charged and realized otoplasty wasn't that expensive (compared to something like a breast aug). Anyway, around that same time I had a chronic ear infection which doctors finally realized was caused by a hole in my ear drum. So I went and found an ENT to fix the ear drum. At the same time, I mentioned the otoplasty. I was super embarrassed to bring it up, maybe because I feel like I'm a really strong candidate if you know what I mean. ha. He immediately was like "Absolutely" and we talked about options. He's giving me an unreal deal. $1700 for the whole procedure (in his office tomorrow) . I'm actually moving away from my current town next week so I won't have much follow-up care, which makes me really nervous. But I couldn't pass this price up -- he's giving me a good deal since I had the tympanoplasty with him already and we've kind of been discussing this for a long time. The lowest I found before that is like $3800. He's using permanent sutures and I'll just be upfront I don't think he's doing the whole pinning, just the top part for money reasons. But I'm OK with that because it's the top part that really bothers me. There are times I've seen other people's ears that stick out a little and I'll think, 'Oh those are cute.' But it's different when they stick out A LOT. Anyway just a rant.

My only concerns are:
1. Pain. I've watched some Youtube videos people saying its terrible. I've seen others where it's described as "minimal." I'm also not stoked about that big bandage. There's a big event going on in my town on Saturday I was hoping to attend if I felt up for it. Not with a huge bandage..haha.
2. Complications/the ear goes back to the way it was. I'm actually moving to Hawaii in January. I'm worried I'l be in Hawaii and having an infection or something and I won't know what to do. I'm thinking at that point, I'd have to find another ENT to fix it.
3. He's an ENT and I haven't been able to find out his plastic surgeon credentials. He's board certified as an Otolaryngologist but not seeing the plastic surgery. His office door says "facial plastic surgery" though and there are no complaints or anything bad about him. And online it lists otoplasty as one of his procedures And he has hospital credentials at several well-known hospitals. I'm wondering if I'm not able to find the right credential or if ENT qualifies him for this. I don't know. But I'm trusting him.

Be careful!! Sounds like you are making a very serious decision based on money alone. You haven't seen his credentials nor any before and after photos of his work. How many times has he performed an otoplasty? My suggestion is to find a reputable facial plastic surgeon who can deliver the results you want. Do not let cost have anything to do with your decision. Nor let someone operate on you because he seems nice. I pray that you go to someone who is very experienced and not only has the surgical expertise but one who has an aesthetic eye and understands the complex anatomy of the ear. Good luck to you as I know how it feels to have this specific problem....

Well thank you you're totally right, I was just really desperate to get it done and it was such an attractive option. But I almost threw up before I was so nervous. It's over now so what's done is done. I didn't get any "oh crap" moments during the surgery like he didn't know what he was doing, he seemed to at least know the process of the procedure. But I would suspect plastic surgery is a very very small component of his work (a small town ENT). I actually looked up when he graduated medical school (2009) which made me feel better. (Wasn't so long ago he wouldn't remember the procedure.) Also, I looked and ENT's are fully authorized to do otoplasty so that made me feel better. But no before and after pictures anywhere. But thank you rmiller have you had this done yet?

Well you were right..not really happy with my results. At best it's a very slight improvement from before. And I mean VERY slight. Still self-consious to wear my hair up, that sort of thing. Kind of feeling like this is all a bad dream. I'm meeting him in a couple days to remove the bandage. I'm almost embarrassed to meet him because it's such a lack of improvement. I wonder if he'll try to pretend like it looks good? I think I'm just going to be grateful it was so inexpensive and hope that, even though it's a minor improvement, it lasts for a while. I haven't had any pain yet either, so I'm grateful for that. But lesson learned big time.

Well it's definitely not the end of the world. If your still upset about them a revision can be made. Just make sure you see someone very experienced who can deliver the results you want. I've had the same problem with a past doctor. If you see someone else, get the operative note from the ENT who just did the surgery and give it to your new doctor. Just know that you're not alone and I completely understand how you feel. Let me know how it goes!!

Hey thank you I appreciate that. I guess I am just mad at myself for throwing away $1,700. I don't know if I should just be happy with my ears the way they are, or consider this unacceptable? It just stinks going to a new doctor is going to be the full price. I don't really have that money right now. What did you end up doing?
December 12, 2015
Well I have the same issue that bothers me as well... The upper part of my ears. If it's just that then it might be considerably cheaper because it's not the full blown otoplasty procedure anymore. I'm in the process of consulting many doctors to talk about a setback suture at the uppermost part. I'm seeing Dr Thomas Le next week in Maryland. So far I've gotten an average price of about $900 to do this. Usually, the norm is to use a mustarde suture to bring back the upper third of the ear but I'm also going to ask about a setback suture which will pexy the triangular fossa to the deep temporal fascia on the side of the head which will decrease the angle of the helix and scalp. I hope this makes sense. I want this to go well so I've read numerous articles and textbook chapters on otoplasty and different techniques. I've learned the different named anatomy of the ear. And I'm bringing in many pictures to the doc to help understand what I want. I feel last time the doctor and I weren't on the same page. In fact I feel we were reading entirely different books!! Ha! But I also agree with you that you should try seeing yourself in a different light. Instead of focusing on what you want your ears to look like, look at people who have ears like you. For example, before surgery I had ears that looked like Tom Hardys. After seeing him I thought, you know what, I like that, it suits him ya know? Anyway, maybe live with it for awhile and you'll find out that they look great!! I hope this helps a little... I know what this is like and it's a little bit harder for me cause I'm a guy and like my hair short. But if ya ever need to talk about it I'll be here cause I know how ya feel:)

Thank you thats really nice of you. Yeah it's funny because I've been talking to friends over the past couple weeks and several were like, "I've never even noticed your ears?" Which is interesting because I wear my hair up a lot and always feel like they stick out so much. I guess part of it is, they are a little more set back, but the fact that they still stick out makes me feel like they're impossible to fix or something. Obviously that's not true, but it's definitely discouraging. $900 isn't at all. I would pay that in a heartbeat. I remember my ENT said he could do the incision otoplasty for an additional $800 but he thought I'd be happy just doing the permanent sutures. I sort of wish I had just spent the additional $800, but at the same time, I wonder if it would have made a difference -- maybe I'd be stuck with the same result but $800 poorer. I guess I'll take your advice and just see if I can live with it for at least a few months to let them heal. If it's still really bothering me, I'll see about other options. Do you know how long you have to wait typically to get a revision?
December 12, 2015
Also, it's funny because I think about it and as a female I've never once cared about a guys ears. Unless they were like enormous dumbo ears it just wouldn't even be a factor in the slightest in his appearance. And even with huge ears, if he was confident and didn't care, I wouldn't either. It isn't as important as other features, such as a big nose, in my opinion. In fact, you think about, say Barack Obama and he looks great! So it's definitely something that I think bothers people on a personal level more so than something everyone else notices.
December 13, 2015
Yes, at this point I feel it's just on a personal level. No one is looking at my ears the way I do. It's just something I would feel better about. A lot of doctors tell you to wait 6 months to a year before a revision. This is for full healing to occur. If I decide to go through with it, I just want to find the best doctor I can where we both have realistic expectations. Revision is somewhat harder because now there's scar tissue the docs have to deal with... which makes them less pliable then they were. Definitely just taking my time to make the best decision possible... Ill let you know how my consults go if you're interested...Thanks you for the kind words!! It helps a lot.....
December 14, 2015
Yeah no problem! I was sort of curious where you were quoted the $900? Or how I'd go about getting a revision for that price? I don't really know the technical details too well but I know I need more pinning back of the ears. Waiting a year SUCKS. Badly. That's a long time to deal with this. I'm pretty angry at my doctor but part of it is my fault anyhow.
December 14, 2015
Hey! The $900 quote I got was just for the single setback suture and that's it. In my case, I believe that's all that is needed. If I were you I'd just start the process of consulting with many facial plastic surgeons to see what they say as far as what technique would be best for you... And to see many before and after pics of their own clients who had the same concerns you do. Are you willing to travel to get this done if need be? There are financing options for you to consider if it turns out to be more...I can only recommend doctors on the east coast since I'm from Philly and most of my search has been on this side...

Thanks for the info. Do you have any pictures or are you planning to post? I understand if you're not comfortable posting but it's always really helpful to see other people's situation and assess. I'll be living in Hawaii so as far as traveling, perhaps Honolulu (I'll be living on the Big Island) but traveling to the mainland I'd rather avoid if there's doctor locally. I researched one in Hawaii who has a lot of reviews. he seems pretty cool. My surgeon wanted me to see him again this week. I'm debating if I want to. There's a very slim to none chance i'll ever be able to have surgery with him again in Hawaii but at the same time It might be good to let him know it wasn't quite what i hoped.
December 17, 2015
Hey- sorry for delayed response. I might put pictures up in the future....I want to see how my consult goes with Dr Le....Well , it certainly is nice to live in Hawaii!!! I'm sure there are great surgeons there.... and I'm also sure that you'll do your due diligence this time as will I in finding the right person for this surgery for our needs. I really do hope you find someone that will help out!! Please let me know how your consults go and Ill do the same.....I'm hoping and praying that the new year brings a great change for both of us!!! God bless!!
